WHO WE ARE
Joan Sutter, M.Ed., Certified Barton Tutor
Joan Sutter is an educator and has been studying dyslexia and exploring current research on the reading brain since 2009. Her passion in this area is the result of her determination to understand why so many capable children struggle with spelling and reading. The evidence based research led Joan to use the Barton Reading & Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham based program, to address the needs of struggling readers and writers. Joan immediately saw positive results and continues to use this explicit, multi-sensory approach to teach children. Joan is convinced that using Orton-Gillingham instruction and allowing customized accommodations is essential to reach nontraditional learners academically and to avoid harming a child’s self esteem. In addition to private tutoring, Joan’s mission is to share this knowledge with educators, parents, our community, universities and legislators. Every child deserves to be on the right road to success! |
Karen Dupont, B.A., Certified Barton Tutor
Karen Dupont started out as a volunteer tutor for an elementary school. The Barton Reading & Spelling System was a newly introduced plan designed to help children struggling with phonemic awareness. This intervention program helped to improve upon the areas of weakness in reading, writing and spelling. The need for volunteers guided Karen to give a few hours a week to three wonderful students. She helped carry out this unique program and very quickly discovered the progress her students made after only a couple months. Test scores improved greatly by the end of the year and Karen became a true believer in the one-on-one, multi-sensory system. Karen’s passion to make a difference in the life of a child led her to become a certified tutor for the Barton Reading & Spelling System. She became especially enthusiastic in helping to create the business SpellVille Tutoring. Her company implements the very successful Barton system. Karen looks forward to assisting those in need and improving the overall education of many children to come. |
